Purphect Purphoros

Purphect Purphoros

Want to do some tricky shenanigans and hit your opponents with stuff they'll never see coming? Well then why not play some Mono-Red! Purphoros, Bronze-Blooded lets us do just that. I mean look at that guy, he just screams sneaky...

Overview

Purphoros, the most inconspicuous god, wants to help us sneak some of our biggest beasties onto the battlefield so we can smack down our opponents. His second ability is what we want to take advantage of, letting us pay 2 of anything and Red to put a Red or Artifact creature into play from our hand. Sure they have to be sacrificed at the end of turn but we can fix that with some shenanigans we have planned. Now being as we don't want to rely too heavily on our commander for our deck to function so we've also built a little redundancy, and a ton of ramp, into the tech to make sure we can always play our big boys. So let's look into our Purphect Purphoros deck!

Get Your Ramp On

We're going to be playing some big boys so that means we need some big mana! First off are our artifacts Sol Ring, Wayfarer's Bauble, and Fellwar Stone. Boring Next the Ritual type effects. These are one off's that give us a big bump in many, but only for that turn. It can make for some big dramatic plays but they tend to be unreliable so you want to save them for your biggest turns. These are Irencrag feat and Mana Geyser. Ill throw Brass's Bounty on that list too, even though you get to keep those treasures for later turns, its still a one time effect. Neheb, The Eternal makes us extra mana towards the end of our post combat main phase but trust me this can net us a TON of mana at the end of the turn. Burnished Hart, Solemn Simulacrum, and Dockside Extortionist can be abused with some of the nifty shenanigans we'll be talking about a little later. Finally, Fires of Invention. The drawbacks with this guy are that we lose some of our interaction by not being able to cast spells on our opponents turns and limits us to casting only two spells per turn when it's our go. Thankfully we can get around these downsides using Purphoros! His activated ability lets us "Put" a card into play rather than casting it. So we can cast some interactive creatures on our opponents turns if need be. Our turns are where it really shines! We can play two huge non-creature spells for free and then we still have plenty of mana left open to put creatures into play with Purphoros. Trust me this card out does itself in this deck every time ive played it.

DRAW THEM CARDS

As you play this deck you'll notice fairly quickly that your biggest problem is having a lot of mana with no hand to play. Obviously a problem we need to combat. Thrill of Possibility, Cathartic Reunion, Faithless Looting, and Jaya Ballard's +1 ability let us pitch our dead draws (don't worry we can get them back) and draw cards to refill our hands.  Those are a little slow so Magus of the Wheel, Dragon Mage, and Reforge the Soul cost us our hands for the purpose of getting a full seven back. Furious Rise and Outpost Siege will exile the top card of our library and then we get to play those cards from exile, basically drawing us an extra card each turn. Neheb, Dreadhorde Champion and Combistable Gearhulk are creatures we can do all sorts of Purphoros tricks with but can also draw us a few cards. WIN WIN! Gamble can sort of tutor for anything with the downside we may accidentally have to discard it. Try to play Gamble when you've got a large hand because your chances of keeping your desired card goes up. Lastly, Underworld Breach goes in this category. Yes I know it doesn't draw us any cards, but it gives us a massive amount of card advantage. When we play Underworld Breach we should have sacrificed a few big creatures to Purphoros and pitched a lot of stuff to the graveyard while we were trying to draw through our deck so we will have all our favorite cards to pick from and plenty to exile to pay the escape costs.

By the Power of Purphoros!!

Purphoros is throwing our big creatures onto the battlefield left and right, so wouldn't it be nice if we could double up on all those enter the battlefield effects? Or maybe even create extra copies of those creatures we're playing? Well now you can with Strionic Resonator and Panharmonicon. Now we can kill twice as many things with Meteor Golem and make twice as many Treasure Tokens with Dockside Extortionist. Minion reflector and Flameshadow Conjuring let us pay a small price to create a token copy of the big creatures we already cheat in with Purphorors so we can double the use we get out of them. Remember though if you target a legendary card you will still get its enter the battlefield ability but you only get to keep one of the creatures. Ok, so a lot of the ways we cheat stuff in play require us to kill those creatures at the end of the turn, but how about we use that to our advantage. Dreamshaper Shaman, and Reality Scramble let us play two and a Red to sacrifice something to get another permanent onto the field. If its going to die anyway might as well get some extra use from those creatures. Mimic Vat lets us abuse those dying creatures by making a new copy of them every turn for only three mana! Feldon of the Third Path pulls stuff from our graveyard every turn, basically making our graveyard into a bigger hand for us to play with. Good thing we threw all those cards in the graveyard with Faithless Looting earlier. Finally Erratic Portal, Conjurer's Closet, and Sundial of the Infinite let us skirt around that lame "Sacrifice this creature at the end of the turn" caveat. With these tricks up our sleeve we can get out of hand pretty dang fast!

Purphoros Smites THEE

As a god, Purphoros sometimes gets annoyed by the other pesky mortals at the table, and reserves the right to remove them from the game if he wishes. Hence, we have a fair amount of removal in our deck. Obviously Chaos Warp, Red Elemental Blast, Pyroblast, and Vandalblast are auto includes in this deck. Warstorm Surge, Blasphemous Act, and Ghired's Belligerence are looking to kill things by doing a bunch of damage in true Red fashion. Inferno Titan, Balefire Dragon, Duplicant, Meteror Golem, Steel Hellkite, and Flameblast Dragon are all big baddies we can cheat in with Purphoros to punish our opponents. All this damage were going to be doing will make soooo much mana with Neheb, the Eternal.

BEGONE MORTALS

Purphoros has had his fun but it is time to show your opponents who godliest god is. We've got a couple of combos available to us that can end the game on a dime. Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker, Splinter Twin, Zealous Conscripts, and Combat Celebrant give us the option to create infinite little tokens all with haste. Swinging in with infinite 3/3 will usually end the game pretty quick. Even quicker if we have Warstorm Surge out on the field. Don't like that combo? How about we cast Insurrection and steal everyone's  creatures until the end of the turn. Usually we can just kill everyone right then and there but even if we don't Sundial of the Infinite will let us keep those creatures indefinitely. Opponents not playing a lot of creatures? Hellkite Tyrant lets us steal artifacts and if we have 20 or more artifacts on our upkeep then we just win the game. Really useful if we can make a ton of artifacts with Dockside Extortionist ar Brass's Bounty and then play Hellkite at instant speed with Purphoros right before our upkeep. Sneaky...

DEXTRAS

So you wanna make your deck even more Purphect. Here's a few cards to help you out with that. First off is the real Sneak Attack which lets us pay a single Red to put a creature from our hand into play and sacrifice it at the end of the turn. Very similar to our Commander's ability with even more upside. We aren't limited to Red creatures and Artifacts, its just any creature (Eldrazi anyone?). Blightsteel Colossus can wipe a player out of the game the turn he comes down with Purphoros. And he isn't legendary so why not make some copies of him? Mycosynth Lattice doesn't do much on its own but when you play Hellkite Tyrant, you get to steal their entire board when you deal damage. Not to mention you'll likely just win on the next upkeep. Finally the original Purphoros, God of the Forge will really round out your infinite token combos killing the table on the spot.
