Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty – Foxy’s Favorites!

By Jeremy Rose

Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty has been one of the most exciting sets we’ve had in a while and, with Streets of New Capenna right around the corner, we at Foxy’s Proxys wanted to share our thoughts about our favorite cards from this sweet set! It’s important to note that, while many of these cards have been great to play with in a variety of formats, we’ll be looking at them with a focus on Commander. Alright, let’s get into it!

JEREMY’S PICKS

Isshin, Two Heavens as One

When Wulfgar of Icewind Dale came out in AFR, I was very interested in building a deck around him. I ended up building one as a Christmas present for a friend and playing against it just makes me love that strategy even more.

Isshin’s twist on that strategy is even more in line with what I like to be doing in Magic given that it has access to black and white. Isshin also doubles triggers from your permanents when an opponent’s creature attacks such as Marchesa’s Decree and other cards like that. Isshin can be insane in the 99 of a deck like Kaalia or Alesha, so I’ll definitely be looking to add it into those lists as well.

Nashi, Moon Sage’s Scion

This little rat guy does a pretty decent impression of Etali, but in black. Obviously weaker, but he’s a heck of a lot cheaper and can have some cool play patterns with his ninjutsu ability. Any black deck that likes to manipulate the top of their library will be especially interested in running this card.

I’ve slotted him into my Varragoth, Bloodsky Sire deck so that I can tutor something up to the top with Varragoth, which has a decent chance of being unblocked due to its deathtouch, ninjutsu in Nashi, then cast whatever I put on top. Neat little things like that make this card pretty interesting to me and something I’m going to have fun with for a while.

Invoke the Winds

Stealing my opponents’ things is one of my absolute favorite things to do in Magic. It’s not for everyone, but I always find it both funny and really enjoyable to try and cobble together wins using cards that are not actually in my deck. Invoke the Winds is a really sweet way of doing this as it’s on a sorcery rather than a permanent so it’s a lot harder to stop.

Most theft cards in Magic are auras or creatures and many of them only allow you to control the permanent until yours leaves the battlefield. With Invoke the Winds, your opponents will have to find another way to regain control of their creature while you reap the benefits of it the whole time. Four blue pips can be tough, but I’m not really all that interested in playing this in a deck that can’t cast it easily.

SHAY’S PICKS

Light-Paws, Emperor’s Voice

This card is incredibly strong in an aura themed deck, even if it’s not the Commander of the deck. I can see this played in the 99 of a Killian, Ink Duelist deck where it not only benefits from the cost reduction, but also is a sort of tutor on a stick. This card is a really cool way to give white some card advantage.

Weaver of Harmony

Any enchantment centric deck should probably be playing this card going forward. Doubling any triggered ability on an enchantment is going to provide some pretty crazy value with a lot of other cards. Untapping your lands twice with something like Bear Umbra or Wilderness Reclamation, doubling the life loss of Wound Reflection, putting an additional time counter on As Foretold each turn, or even just getting an extra Shrine trigger here and there all seem like useful things and there a lot of decks that will want to take advantage of this card.

Tameshi, Reality Architect

I’ve always been really interested in building a Niambe Legendary matters deck, but I think Tameshi might actually be a better commander for that deck. It is restricted to noncreature permanents, which is definitely pretty limiting, but I think bouncing things to reanimate artifacts and enchantments to trigger all my legendary ETBs again seems awesome.

Atsushi, the Blazing Sky

Rather than looking at playing this card as the commander of a deck, I’m looking at playing this guy in the 99, specifically the 99 of my Purphoros, Bronze-Blooded deck. I play a ton of copy cards in this deck, such as Splinter Twin, and the fact that Atsushi’s copies would die immediately is actually exactly what I’m looking for. This card offers a ton of flexibility with making mana or gaining card advantage and I can see either one being great depending on the situation. I’m definitely excited to have some new toys for this deck and this one is right at the top of the list.

That’ll do it for our favorite cards from the set! This return to Kamigawa has been super cool thematically and the cards have been really fun to play with as well! What are your favorite cards from the set? Is there anything about the cards we listed that we may have forgotten to mention? Let us know what you think!
