Adventures in the Forgotten Realms – Our Most Anticipated Commanders!

By Foxy’s Proxys Gaming

Adventures in the Forgotten Realms is here, and the Foxy crew are all very excited to experience the new Commander landscape that comes with sets like this! We all are looking forward to playing with and against some new faces in the command zone, so we thought we’d list some out for you. These are not in any particular order and not necessarily the most powerful cards in the set, but merely cards we found to be exciting and things we’d like to play.

Kalain, Reclusive Painter

This card makes for a pretty sweet take on a Rakdos deck. The Treasure it creates can act like ramp in a color pair that can find itself lacking support cards in that area. Kalain also encourages a cool aggro angle by buffing up your creatures when you spend Treasure mana on them. Kalain will pump out some real powered up threats and almost certainly have the mana to keep them coming.

Volo, Guide to Monsters

This is another addition to the long list of very powerful Simic commanders, but this one comes with a neat spin in the form of a unique deck building restriction. Filling a deck with creatures of all different types and trying to maximize the value from Volo’s copy ability will be interesting and seems like a fun way to construct a creature-based strategy. Additionally, Volo is the type of commander that can get way out of hand if it is allowed to stick around and keep Xeroxing out new creature after creature. The key will be protecting Volo and not letting this powerful copy machine get jammed.

Nihiloor

The one, true Mr. Steal Yo Girl. Nihiloor is a really cool commander to have helm a deck centered around stealing creatures, and maybe even other permanents, from the other side of the battlefield. Normally, red is a color that tends to be associated with stealing opponents’ things, so it’s really neat to see an Esper commander being able to try its hand at it. It will be interesting to see how Nihiloor stacks up against other thieving style decks like Marchesa, the Black Rose or Brion Stoutarm.

Orcus, Prince of Undeath

What a big beefy boi. This chubby demon has two keyword abilities and two enter the battlefield abilities, of which you get to choose one. Both of his abilities are super powerful, but the second one is the one that really draws the eye. Orcus reanimates so many things. It’s almost a better Agadeem’s Awakening stapled onto a creature, but it reanimates even more things because Orcus only cares about X or less mana value rather than a bunch of different ones. This card seems super strong coming out of the command zone and having a pretty big board wipe as its other ability is no joke either.

That’s the Foxy’s Proxys Gaming list for our most anticipated commanders from Magic’s new set, Adventures in the Forgotten Realms! Let us know what you think of our picks and tell us what commanders, or other cards, you’re excited to see on the battlefield!
